Origami Horse Instructions

Follow the simple step-by-step instructions with pictures to learn how to make a stylish origami horse.

I believe this origami horse is one of the best looking ones out there that is also pretty easy to fold. However, it does have more steps than your average easy origami, and there are a couple of inside reverse folds. If you don’t know what an inside reverse fold is, don’t worry. It’s easy and the step by step instructions and pictures will show you.

One other thing I want to mention about this origami horse is that it does require scissors. Purists will say this isn’t exactly origami then, but the average person doesn’t really care. The cuts allow this horse to be one of the most handsome origami out there without being too complex to fold.

How is the Origami Horse Sealed?

Origami Horse can be sealed with wax. Making origami watercraft with melted beeswax or soy wax is a great method to organically waterproof your creations. Just fold the boat as you like, then cover all exposed surfaces with molten wax using an old paintbrush.

Can I Fold an Origami Horse Using Waterproof Paper?

It is indeed usable. By choosing water-resistant materials in advance, you can waterproof origami. For use in origami, several firms provide waterproof and tear-proof paper. The perfect surface for outdoor origami is a synthetic material called Tyvek, constructed of flash-spun polyethylene strands. Another choice is wax paper that has been precisely cut to the required size.

Step 1

Start with a square piece of paper. I am using an 7×7 inches origami paper.

If you only have regular paper, follow these instructions on how to make a square origami paper.

Step 2

Fold the paper in half from top left corner to the bottom right corner.

Step 3

Fold in half again from top right corner to left corner.

Step 4

Rotate clockwise by 90° as shown.

Step 5

Squash fold the upper layer. To do this, open the upper layer.

Step 6

Now fold down while creasing the sides.

Step 7

Turn the model over.

Step 8

Now squash fold the other flap. To do this, make the left flap stand vertically.

Step 9

Then open up the top flap as shown.

Step 10

Now squash it down.

Step 11

Fold the left side of the upper layer to the center.

Fold the right side of the upper layer to the center.

Unfold the sides and fold the top corner down.

Now unfold. With a scissor, cut only the upper layer straight down the middle, but stop at the top crease. Careful not to cut anything else.

Step 15

Fold up the flaps that you just cut as shown in the picture.

Step 16

Fold the left side along the crease to the center.

Fold the right side along the crease to the center.

Step 18

Turn the model over.

Step 19

Fold the left side along the crease to the center.

Step 20

Fold the right side along the crease to the center.

Fold the top down.

Unfold the top and sides. Like before, cut straight down the middle of the top layer, but stopping at the crease. Be careful not to cut anything else below the layer.

Fold the right flap up like before.

Now fold the left flap up.

Fold the left flap along the crease to the center.

Fold the right flap along the crease to the center.

Rotate upside down.

Fold the top left corner as shown.

Unfold.

Now we’ll create the head with an inside reverse fold. Open the left tip a little so you can bend a small portion of it down.

Now bend the tip in and crease the sides.

Fold the tail down as shown.

Unfold.

Inside reverse fold the tail. To do this, open the tail first.

Now fold down at the crease, then crease together. Voila!
