Origami Tulip Instructions (Step-by-step)

Learn how to fold a beautiful origami tulip by following our easy, step-by-step instructions and helpful images.

This origami tulip is a classic. I still remember my elementary teacher showing the class how to make one, and everyone was fascinated by it. The coolest part was when you had to blow into it and form the petals. It was very cool to see someone take a piece of paper and transform it into something beautiful.

I can understand why many teachers would want to teach their students how to make an origami tulip. It’s insanely fun and easy to fold. There are actually two parts to the tulip, the flower and the stem. I also provide instructions on how to fold the stem, but if you’re lazy, you can simply roll up a piece of paper into a very thin scroll or use a pencil.

Step 1

Start with a square piece of origami paper. I am using an 7×7 inches origami paper.

If you only have regular paper, follow these instructions on how to make a square origami paper.

Step 2

Face the lighter side upwards if you are using two color sided origami paper.

Step 3

Fold the upper left corner to the lower right corner.

Step 4

Unfold.

Step 5

Fold the upper right corner to the lower left corner.

Step 6

Unfold.

Step 7

Fold the top half backwards.

Step 8

Unfold. You now have creases where the dotted gray lines go.

Step 9

Poke the center of the paper to make it pop in.

Step 10

Bring the left and right creases to the center and the paper should collapse into a triangle.

Step 11

Firmly press the triangular shape.

Step 12

Fold the right corner to the top corner.

Step 13

Fold the left corner to the top corner.

Step 14

Fold the figure over.

Step 15

Repeat step 14 and 15 on this side too by folding the side corners to the top corner.

Step 16

Fold only the top layer of the left side over to the right.

Step 17

Turn the figure over.

Step 18

Once again, fold only the top layer of the left side over to the right.

Step 19

To insert the left flap all the way into the right flap, fold the top layers as shown.

Step 20

Now insert the left flap into the right flap, then flatten.

Step 21

Turn the figure over.

Step 22

To insert the left flap all the way into the right flap, fold the top layers as shown.

Insert the right flap all the way into the left flap, then flatten.

Step 24

Pick up the tulip from the bottom as seen in the picture and spread the flaps apart.

Step 25

Use both hands to blow into the small hole at the bottom of the tulip.

Step 26

The tulip should puff up like this.

Step 27

Peel the petal down, but be careful not to loosen the flap that you tucked earlier.

Step 28

Peel the other three petals down.

Stick the stem into the bottom of the tulip and you’re all done! Wasn’t that easy?

Thank you for the tutorial! It was very clear, although I struggled a bit blowing them up. I think my paper was too thick? I will refine my technique for future attempts!
